A Day at the Happiest Place on Earth! French style...

When I woke up this morning with having had again only 3 hours a sleep, a jolting pain went shooting in all directions of my body. I laid there and wondered what the heck I did to become this sore. Then I remembered yesterday... beach volleyball, amazing dive, ripping of the pants... need I say more?

We had it all planned out to get up early and head to Versailles for a day trip today. Our plans changed last minute when we found out the metro line we needed to take was closed. So we sat... and sat... and sat... trying to figure out something else fun to do. We went and got breakfast then came back and contemplated some more. Finally at the same time Ryan and I said, "Let's go to Disneyland Paris! Let's just do it!" I think it's fair to say that Ryan and I are both mildly obsessed with Disney and by mildly I mean extremely so it seemed perfect!

Since there are few words that can describe the happiest place on earth I think pictures and descriptions will best tell the story of our amazing day at Disneyland Paris!

Bienvenue to Disneyland Paris!!

The minute I walked in and saw my castle, I mean Cinderella's castle I felt right at home. Disneyland and I were made for each other!
We started with Indiana Jones which is totally a roller coaster ride at Disneyland Paris unlike back home!
Last summer Ryan and I went to Disneyland California and I dragged him around the park on a "find the Princesses mission" the ENTIRE day! I decided since I already owe him for saving the day yesterday, I could settle for a quick tea part with the Mad Hatter instead!

Ready for my tea!

Just saying hello to my castle! They obviously forgot I was coming and locked my door...

We found the cutest little boat ride which we don't have in California. Naturally it started to rain!

Which did amazing things to my hair.
And by amazing I mean terribly awful!

This is how much my drenched hair scared us!
But we carried on anyway! Hoping my hair would scare others out of their places in line. Thunder Mountain was AMAZING!!!! It is WAY better than ours!
Also, guess who has her own village in Disneyland Paris?
Pocahontas!!!

And the Queen from Alice and Wonderland has her own labyrnth!
Rachael- "I dunno which way to go!"
Ryan- (says confidently) "We go this way!"

Nope, not going to fit through that door...
Taking a picture of Ryan taking a picture of me with the card stacks.
We found our way out and headed for Pirates of the Caribbean. No explanation needed for this one...
WE LOVE SPACE MOUNTAIN!!

We decided to end the evening with my personal favorite It's a Small World. Gosh that's such a happy ride!
On our way out, I found a spot for my future bakery. Two of my favorite things (Disney and baking) all in one park. I don't think it could get much better than that!
What a fabulous day at the Happiest place on earth... French style!

Only I would play beach volleyball in Paris and rip my pants...

It's official! Paris has turned me into an insomniac. Just wanted to keep you up to date on my lack of sleep! Moving on...

Don't ask me why but for some reason Ryan and I thought it would be fun to head out super early and ride bikes over to the Catacombs... I know right? STUPID! It's no secret that I stink at bike riding in Paris. We already discussed this. However, at the time we were sure there would be no cars on the road and we would be safe. We were wrong, no surprise there. There were more than way to many cars on the road and they were just as dangerous as yesterday and the day before and the day before and I was just as hazardous on that bike as before. Not only did we almost get turned into road kill but we also got lost! More than once... Oh and did I mention it was raining outside?
I put on my pouty face and made Ryan put the bike away. Early morning bike mission= failure! In reflecting back on this I decided that other than the fact that it's a big fun game of dodge the cars when on the road, I think the biggest reason the bike ride failed is because I was not dressed appropriately. I mean, I was wearing pants for goodness sake- much too modest for a bike ride!

Ryan- "Hey, I think I know where we are!"
Rachael- "We're lost, put the bike away!"

We did finally make it to the Catacombs on foot. It ended up being perfect that we put the bikes away next to a metro station because on our on foot journey Ryan actually gave directions to that exact metro station to a lost couple IN FRENCH. Let me repeat that... Ryan gave directions IN FRENCH!! Way to go Ryan! I just smiled and nodded like I knew exactly what was going on.
Even though we got to the Catacombs early we still had to wait in line a while. Once we got inside it was totally worth the wait!

In line at the Catacombs.

Ryan and I have accepted that we might be too big for Paris. Yesterday we were ashamed of our feet size and could barely fit through the door to the bell tower at Notre Dame. Once we got underground in the Catacombs our heads bonked on the ceiling. It's totally fine though. Like I said, we've accepted it.

It was very spooky in the Catacombs but so fascinating. This is a wall of real human bones from LONG ago! It goes on and on and on. So sad but crazy to think how they managed to create this with the bones!

After the Catacombs we decided to visit the Louvre museum which is the home to some of the world's most famous paintings. Rather than walking our feet off (literally) we thought it best we take the metro. When walking through the tunnel to our stop the music suddenly got REALLY loud! We were confused as to why there was no music and then all of a sudden the metro people wanted to blow out our eardrums out. We realized that there was a lady with a speaker and a microphone standing in the middle of the tunnel. SHE was the one creating the music. Based on how loud it was, I'm going to guess she was set on making sure we (and all of France) heard her! We were still trying to understand what we had just witnessed when the exact same thing happened ON the metro. It was quiet and then BAM! Loud music. This time is was a man with a speaker and a saxophone. He was playing along to background music. Since we now had schema about this live music thanks to tunnel lady, we discovered right away where the man was. He enthusiastically serenaded our train of grumpy, tired, irritated people. I thought it was hilarious so I happily bobbed my head along to his peppy music.

Finally, we arrived at the museum!
As you can see it's ENORMOUS!

The museum was also packed! I don't think I've ever seen this many people contained in one building. I think I may have actually experienced every emotion in the museum; happy, confused (most these paintings made no sense to me. Let's be honest, I wouldn't exactly call myself an art expert), clausterphobic, in pain (from people stepping on my already sore and swollen feet), and humored by Ryan's beyond random comments about paintings.
The museum was actually very amazing, it was just hard to appreciate with all the people. It was worth fighting the crowds though to see the one and only Mona Lisa!

If you look closely passed the angry mob of people you will see her hanging on the wall. This is as close as we were brave enough to get!

Now comes the part of the day you've all been waiting for... BEACH VOLLEYBALL!!! There are four courts with sand and everything set up in front of city hall not far from our apartment. After I discovered these yesterday I was determined to find myself a team and join in the fun today. Ryan had a great attitude about coming along even though he didn't want to play. He gave me the thumbs up frequently and took pictures. I had my own personal photographer. It was perfect!

I found a team of three French guys who needed a fourth player. Obviously they all spoke French and I very much speak English and only English so there was a lot of smiling and nodding on my part. Luckily, all three of my new friends spoke enough English to order me around the court. I found out real quick that I landed myself on a team of extremely kind but competitive French men.

We started off strong! We instantly had great teamwork and complimented each other well on the court. During the first game I made this amazing dive and you won't believe it but I RIPPED MY PANTS!! We're not talking just a little rip in the knee either. We're talking about a ridiculously noticeable rip from the top of the butt crack all the way down my leg! I of course was in complete shock at first. A.) Because my amazing dive was actually successful and B.) because I had a huge rip down my pants. I looked at my self appointed team leader and said, "ummm.. can't I get a sub?" He said, "What? Why?" I explained, "Well, I ripped my pants." He looked confused and said, "What?" "I ripped my pants I repeated. He still looked at me puzzled so I just turned around and lifted up my shirt to show him the enormous hole running down my butt. His eyes got really wide and he said, "Wahew!" (Don't worry, I had on cute underwear). As I mentioned before though, my team was very hard core and were not about to let my dilemma keep us from winning the game. I could have just completely taken off my pants and nobody would have cared. They insisted I keep playing. So I just pulled my shirt down as far as it would go and pushed on through. I can't imagine running down the street with this rip being much better than continuing on. THANK GOODNESS I HAD RYAN THERE!! While I continued playing with pretty much no pants left Ryan rushed back to the apartment, grabbed some clothes from my suitcase and rushed back. Luckily, we had just finished when he returned so I ran behind the men's toilet room that was set up specially for volleyball (I couldn't find the women's toilet room) and changed my clothes. I played the second game in a skirt and leggings!

Playing volleyball was the highlight of my trip so far. Even though I didn't understand what was going on half the time I had an incredible time taking part in the Parisian festival! That's what I call living like a local!

The beginning of game 1!

About to serve the ball. My team was pleased with my serving.
They were not please with my setting however. Dani Burke, I needed you here to set the ball for me. I'm a terrible setter. I just like to hit it!
Luckily Ryan caught the whole amazing dive and splitting of the pants on camera.
The moment just before... running to the ball...

And down I go! RRRIIIIIPPPPP!!!!
I seriously owe Ryan for saving the day! He knew I'd be safe to play the second game in leggings and a skirt. Nothing to rip in this outfit...

Goodbye black capris!

It was sad saying goodbye to my team. I mean after all, we went through A LOT together in only two hours. This is a day we will ALL remember for the rest of our lives there's no doubt about that!
We finished the evening with a trip to the Eiffel tower at dusk. Naturally we got lost but it worked out perfect because we made friends with a man named Jack from Philadelphia who was heading to the same place and was also lost. We ended up entering the wrong metro station about four times but once again Ryan pulled through and got us there! Jack made the whole journey with us.

Thank you new friend Jack for taking our picture!

We got to see the tower twinkle!

Day three in Paris and the best so far! I'm not going to lie, I didn't foresee today's adventures but that is what makes it exciting! Stay tuned because tomorrow we are taking a day trip to Versailles!

Whew! Day 2 in Paris!

This morning was excellent. Ryan once again slept soundly and woke up refreshed. I on the other hand have never had trouble sleeping my entire life but apparently I'm so excited to be in Paris that I've developed a sudden case of insomnia. That's okay though, we headed out early excited to start the day.

We stopped by an adorable "boulangerie" (bakery) for breakfast. I picked out a yummy looking pastry but almost threw up in my mouth when I read that it was called "escargots choc pistache". Being the terrible French invalid that I am I only recognized "escargot" and of course thought there were snails in the pastry. Luckily Ryan is intelligent and explained to me that there are no snails in the pastry but that "escargot" is referring to the shape (round like a snail). Boy was that NOT snail filled pastry delicious!

We decided to start with the Notre Dame today.

It was so neat! I was especially fascinated by all the gargoyles because I of course grew up watching the Hunch Back of Notre Dame and the gargoyles in that movie kinda freaked me out. They were pretty darn accurate I'm not gonna lie- pretty freaky in person too!

Remember yesterday how I complained about the stairs to our apartment? I'd like to take it all back now because after the NEVER ENDING STAIRCASES and I mean LITERALLY never ending at Notre Dame we practically flew up our apartment stairs. The stairs at Notre Dame are also extremely narrow. Ryan and I were both fortunate enough to be blessed with enormous feet so naturally we each tripped at least six times. I guess that is bound to happen when your feet are twice the length of the stairs!

Ryan- "Rachael, smile"
Rachael- (pant, gasp, pant, deep breath) okay! (pant, pant, gasp some more)

When we got to the top however, it was completely worth it! The view of Paris is beautiful. This really nice British man offered to take our photo. I think he is a photographer. He was very specific about our positioning in the photo! :)
I detected a theme of "tiny" at Notre Dame. The stairs are miniscule but you should see the door to the bell tower! We were already feeling bad about our enormous feet so naturally we started to feel a little insecure when we got to this door!

It's okay though because the door led us to...
wait for it...
THE BELL OF NOTRE DAME!!

After Notre Dame we decided to ride bikes to the Montearnasse. You know the phrase, "It's just like riding a bike. Once you got it, you got it forever." I'm sorry to burst your bubble but whoever originally said this is a LIAR!! I used to be able to ride a bike and now I'm a hazard to myself and others. It doesn't help that the drivers here are absurd. As bikers we had the great privilege of sharing our bike lane with buses. You know, because buses are so small like bikes and everything. I was trying to be big, bad, and brave but it was about the time that I was almost hit by a taxi who swerved into our lane to pass a car and nearly took me out in the process that I refused to bike any longer. I made Ryan put his bike away too and walk with me the rest of the way.

Me on my bike before my near death experience. Yes, I'm wearing a skirt. Just be glad I'm wearing leggings because it seems to be the norm with the French woman to wear dresses on bikes. Just dresses... no leggings...
It all worked out for the best with putting our bikes away and walking because we ended up having a new experience with toilets. Since neither Ryan or I are excited to step foot in the random toilet rooms located in the middle of sidewalks we decided to step into a mall to go to the bathroom. Turns out, if you want to use a not so scary toilet you have to pay money. We were so intrigued by this concept that we just had to pay the money so we could experience the "expensive" (50 cents each) toilet rooms!

There were even people sitting at a desk right inside waiting to collect our money.

We eventually made it to the Montearnasse which is a super tall 56 floor building. We went to what we thought was the very top.

We enjoyed playing with our cameras!

We thought the view of the city from the top of Notre Dame was amazing but it was even more incredible from up here!

I especially loved the fact that we were safely inside a building protected by thick glass windows. Ryan of course found out that we were not in fact at the very top and that we could climb stairs that lead outside to the roof. I'm not gonna lie, the thought of going to the roof of a 56 story building with Ryan terrified me. The two of us together are not exactly the most lucky or coordinated team. However, since I made him put away his bike so he could no longer join in the fun of swerving around buses like cars, I decided it was only fair that I go to the top with him.
Don't worry mom, there was a wall of protective glass on the roof as well!

View from the roof!
By the time we got to the bottom, we were exhausted so we decided to WALK (not ride bikes) to the Jardin du Luxembourg because it was close and sounded beautiful and peaceful! It was all that and more! There were people everywhere, lounging in the grass, sitting on random chairs and benches, playing games, and simply relaxing and enjoying the beautiful day! We decided to take a seat and join in the fun!

Also at the beautiful place resides the palace where the senate meets!
Flowers!
I loved the adorable children sending their home made sailboats into this pond located in front of the senate palace!
We decided to take a short break today and head back to the apartment to rest our feet. My Uncle BC suggested a bike ride this evening along the Seine River where there are no cars. Despite our horrific experience on bikes earlier in the day, the thought of no cars made this suggestion appealing. There is a festival going on right now that includes a beach theme. There are fake beaches set up all along the river so this made the bike ride all the more beautiful!

Riding my bike!
Ryan with his bike!
This festival is legit! They even set up beach toilets!
It was a perfect evening until I ran into a wall.... it hurt... really really bad! Yes, we were just riding along on our bikes searching for a place to return them when I hit the wall full force. I hit it so hard that it knocked me clear off my bike. Ryan was ahead of me so he just kept rolling right along not aware that I just had a major collision. I called out, "Ryan, I just ran into a wall!!"He slammed on his brakes and turned around and said, "You WHAT?"
I said in a sad tone, "It hurt real bad!" He just stared at me in disbelief and then said, "I'm sorry" although he was still trying to figure out how in the world I managed that!

Luckily, the collision stunned me but left no serious injuries. Just a small scratch near my elbow and a sad face!
It all got better though when we discovered that as a part of the festival, beach volleyball nets were set up near our apartment! Stay tuned because tomorrow I plan on joining in the fun and playing some beach volleyball with my new French friends that I haven't met yet!

Observations in Paris!

I have good news and bad news to report. The good news: Ryan started the day having had a solid eight hours of delightful slumber. The bad news: I started the day having had 2 (and I wouldn't exactly say it was delightful). I'm not sure what in the world happened here. I can normally sleep through a hurricane. I guess I'm just so excited to be in Paris!

Have no fear though! We certainly didn't let my lack of sleep stop us from an adventurous first day! I made a lot of observations about the Parisian way of life today.
Observations include:
*Number 1- Parisian people do not believe in space bubbles. This is alright with me because I don't really believe in them either. I'm all about hugs and being friends with everyone. However, I'm learning that EVERYTHING in Paris is extremely close to something else. Tables at restaurants, cars on the road... you know, just small things.
*Number 2- The driving in Paris is both exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. Every time we step outside it's like we're in an action movie and we never know when we are going to have to dive out of the way and save each other's lives. We even saved the lives of a couple from Toronto Canada today so we feel really good about that! Needless to say, once you step outside of your home there is never a dull moment. There are no lanes on the roads. Cars just kinda swerve around each other as they please. Good thing all the cars here are skinny!
*Number 3- Mopeds and their drivers rule the world (or at least France)! Not only do Mopeds drive super fast and swerve in between cars and in and out of the bike lane but they also enjoy cutting across side walks and small walk ways. One minute I'm just strolling down the sidewalk and the next minute six mopeds are speeding past me in all directions. They also park wherever they please. I witnessed one man today drive his moped up on the sidewalk all the way to the door of the store he wished to enter. He just hopped off and strolled in like nothing happened. I'm not gonna lie, I kind of want a moped so I can posses such power!
Number 4- Parisian people are incredibly calm and laid back. I don't know about you but when I'm at home I'm always in a hurry and I'm running around like a crazy person 24/7! Well that's not how people role in Paris and it's fantastic. Nobody seems to be in a hurry. They take time to actually sit down and enjoy their coffee in the morning rather than ordering it to go and drinking it in the car on the way to where they are going.
Number 5- Parisian people are kind and reflective. I can't tell you how many people I saw just sitting in completely random spots outside (parks, benches, stairs, curbs, etc.) writing in journals. What a neat concept- taking time throughout the day to just write down thoughts. It's probably why nobody is running around like a crazy person like I do in my life. When having lunch with friends, they sit back in their chairs and actually listen and ponder what their friends are saying. They aren't only sort of listening because they are multitasking checking their email, facebook, and twitter all at the same time! :)
Number 6- I may or may not be obsessed with the "toilet rooms" here. I mean look at this toilet, it's just chilling in the middle of the sidewalk!

Number 7- Paris is beautiful and so are the people. It's just so refreshing to walk around here. Everything is beautiful and the people are beautiful not just on the outside but on the inside too (although, maybe not their lungs because so many of them smoke). Seriously, they take time everyday to help language invalid people like me figure out what's going on. That takes serious patience!
Number 8- Paris is the most diverse place I've ever been. There are literally people of all shapes, sizes, colors, smells, etc. speaking French all around us. No judging a book by it's cover here because if you do, chances are good you got the story all wrong!

Needless to say, we had an amazing day living the Parisian life. We literally walked for about 8 hours straight. Our feet and legs feel like they are going to fall off but if I could go back I'd do it all again. I'm not gonna lie though, the four flights of stairs to our apartment are not my favorite. If I could I think I might change that part. We almost decided to just camp out at the front door to our apartment but we gave our feet a little pep talk and persevered to the top!

I took this from our floor looking down. If you look closely you can see Ryan at the very bottom looking up.

Okay enough complaining about the stairs. It was a fabulous day and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings! Stay tuned for more adventure!

Bon Appétit... or something like that!

Luckily our plane to London from DC was only an hour late so we boarded at 11:00pm Eastern standard time. We were in the very back of the plane, no surprise there (actually I lied, we were four rows from the very back) but we were okay with that. The plane was huge! It had three rows of three going across the plane and Ryan and I were in the middle row.

On the plane!

It was a pleasant surprise to us when the flight attendants came down the isle with a hot dinner for everyone. Our choice was "pasta or beef". We both decided on pasta so naturally we got beef because they were out of pasta by the time they got to us. Ryan put down his tray table first only to find the last person to sit in that seat left him a present. I laughed uncontrollably when I saw the half eaten pastry just chillin' on Ryan's tray table but Ryan is not a fan of germs (that's an understatement) so he did not find the little surprise very humorous.

Finally after our layover in London we arrived in Paris around 5:00pm. After we picked up Ryan's luggage we went looking for the restrooms. We didn't find the "restrooms" but we did find the "toilets". Note to self- we use toilets here in Paris, not restrooms!

As soon as I walked into the toilet room I fell in love with the fantastic pink room!

Toilet room at Paris Airport!
I think it's extremely funny to tell Ryan now, "I have to use the toilet". He just looks at me and says, "Too much information!"

Our apartment was only a hop, skip, and a jump away from the airport and by "hop, skip, and a jump" I mean a 30 min train ride, 6 walkalators (those flat conveyor belt things), two stops on the metro, and a 10 minute walk (It was supposed to be two minutes but we got a little lost). I loved every minute though! As soon as I stepped off the plane I took in a deep breath of fresh clean air. Our apartment is adorable and the two guys we are renting from were precious.

Here we have the dining area/kitchen!
The bathroom! Totally old fashion but modern at the same time! It was a little bit of a shock though when we were looking for the bathroom or should I say "toilet" room door and only found a curtain. I could definitely hear Ryan singing in the shower loud and clear!
After we were showered and feeling recovered from our ridiculously long trip from Pasco, WA and hike up four flights of stairs to our apartment with all our luggage we decided it was time to go exploring.

View of the street from one of our apartment windows.
After walking around for a while we found a nice place to eat dinner. Of course the waiter started talking to us in French because he didn't realize we were American. I got a little scared because I had no idea what he was saying but Ryan just whipped out his mad French skills and had a little conversation with the waiter. Ryan told me back in Pasco that he knows French. I just said, "I'll believe that when I see it!" Okay Ryan, I believe it now! The waiter was super sweet and even tried to help me speak a little French. I tried my best even though I am a language invalid.

First night in Paris!

We realized when we left the restaurant that neither of us paid attention to how we got there. Oops...
we made it back though...
eventually....

We entered in the code to get in the outside door and then used the key to get into the glass door leading to the stairs (don't worry mom, we are very safe behind all our locked doors). Of course we couldn't find the light switch in the stairway to our apartment. Have no fear though, I just happened to have the flashlight ap on my iphone so we made it up four flights of old fashion wooden stairs in the dark. Thank you flashlight ap!

We've only been here a few hours but it's been fabulous so far! We can't wait to see what tomorrow brings! Thank you Uncle BC for helping us plan this amazing trip!

And the journey continues...

Today I left home for another fantastic Destination ImagiNation adventure. I have the opportunity to put on a camp at Lakenheath AFB in England. Before I'm off to the base however, I am taking an adventure to Paris for a week with Ryan Woodland who will be facilitating a camp in Germany the same week I'm in England.

The Journey to Paris is as follows:

11:20am- Depart Pasco and head to Denver

Thumbs up to going to Paris!
3:30pm- Depart Denver for DC

Look who we found in Denver! Charlie was on is way home from a camp in Las Vegas. Best surprise ever!!

10:02pm- Depart DC for London (Naturally our plane was delayed an hour so we won't leave until 11:00pm. I'm just so impressed we made it this far without any trouble. If you followed my blog last summer you'll know I'm not exactly the luckiest...)

Next stop is London. We should arrive sometime around 11:00am. We will then board another plane to Paris where the real adventure begins!

Stay tuned! Lots more excitingness to come!! :)
